Black widow spider on upper back

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

A large black widow spider is tattooed on the upper back, shown in a three-quarter view with its legs spread across the skin. The spider's glossy abdomen has smooth grey shading and a small red hourglass marking, and the legs are rendered with fine dark outlines and soft highlights. The composition is centred on the spider, with freckled skin visible around the design.

Dear Tom,

You'll think I've lost my wits, but I've kept the cellar door shut since Tuesday because of the thing that's taken up residence in the arch above the old well. Mr Ferris from the council brought a crate of reclaimed oak up from Chatham for the new floor in the great hall, and somewhere between the docks and here a black widow hitched a ride in the grain. I know what it is because of the hourglass on her belly, bright as a drop of sealing wax. Nobody round here has ever seen one.

Mrs Oakes at the village shop says they like dry stone and warm corners, which describes every wall at Carrow Keep. Her nephew was bitten in Spain and was poorly for a week. I told her we'd leave the lamp on and leave her be, and she hasn't moved in three days. She just keeps her legs spread across the stone as if she's measuring the place for a new roof.

Here is the odd part. Last night I went down with the torch to count the fallen masonry and found her web strung right across the doorway, fine as gauze, with a moth caught in it. She hadn't eaten the moth. She had wrapped it neatly, the way Mam used to wrap the Sunday chicken, and left it hanging there for whoever came next.

I've decided she can have the arch. Bring your boots when you come at Easter, and mind the third step down.

Yours, Ellen
