Your father swears the swans are the same three that followed us from Oxford, and I have stopped arguing. The cargo of slate sat in the hold all week because the wharfinger's boy lost the docket, and I have spent the idle hours mending the stove flue and teaching the cat to sit on the tiller.

Yesterday a fisherman from the upper reach came aboard to sell us eels and stayed for tea. He told us a grey-haired woman had walked her dog along the towpath every morning since March, always stopping by the old boat shed to look at the water. He said she had a drawing of a whale in her coat pocket and showed it to anyone who asked, saying the whale had come up the Thames once in his grandfather's time and gone back out on the next tide. I laughed at him, and he didn't laugh back, so I suppose I have been thinking about it since.

I wanted to tell you before the lock opens. If we are ever out past the estuary together, keep your eyes on the grey swell and not on the sky. Whales do not announce themselves. They just lift, all blue and silver, and then they are gone, and you are left with the wake and the strange feeling you were allowed to see something you had no business seeing.
