Small seahorse tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small seahorse is tattooed on the side of an ankle, drawn in black ink with fine outlines and textured shading along the body and tail. The design sits alone against bare skin, with the rolled hem of dark jeans visible above it. The photograph is taken from a low angle on a black leather seat, which keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The wedding was set for the low spring tide, because Ada Pryce's mother said a bride should marry where the sea could see her. Tom Fenn had nothing to offer but a bag of salted cod and a promise, so he went out before dawn to the rocks below the lighthouse and waited for the water to drop.

In a pool no bigger than a washbasin he found a seahorse caught in the weed. It curled its tail round his thumb and would not let go. Everyone in Haverly knew the old saying: a seahorse that is kept will carry your luck through every lean year. So he tucked it into his cap, still dripping, and carried it home to set in a jar of seawater on the windowsill.
At the wedding the jar sat on the trestle between the bread and the pickled herring. Guests came to look, and each one leaned close and said nothing, because the small creature seemed to be looking back at them with great seriousness. When the vows were done, it lifted its head, shook the water from its crest, and swam three slow turns round the glass before settling again among the pebbles.
Ada laughed and said the sea had signed the register, and nobody in the hall argued. The jar stayed on that windowsill for forty years, and the tide came in at the hour it was owed.
