The storm had dragged the nets half across the shingle by dawn, and Dorion found the thing tangled in the last of them, its grey head folded like a bolster and its trunk hanging out of the mesh like a wet rope. His father wanted it cut up for the salting vats before the gulls got to it. Dorion wanted to know why its one eye, as wide as a cartwheel hub, was following him.

Word went along the harbour faster than the tide. A potter from the upper street came down with a stylus in his belt, sure he could sell its likeness to men who had never seen a beast that carried its own weight in ivory. The fishwife Kallia said it was a sea-mother come to claim her children. The ship's cook said it would feed forty men for a month. Dorion stood between the knife and the net and said nothing useful at all, only that the creature had come in on the high water and would surely want to go back out on it.
When the men lifted the net to drag it up the slipway, a tentacle came free and found Dorion's wrist. The suckers were cool and gripped the way a child holds a finger, not hard, just certain. He did not pull away. Somebody swore, somebody else went for the knife, and the creature simply turned its head toward the sea.
The next swell lifted it clean off the stones. It went out backwards in a churn of white curls, and the net came away empty behind it. Dorion kept the ring of pale marks on his wrist for a week, and by the time they faded the potter had already painted an elephant on a jar with arms that curled like a question, and sold it to a merchant from Carthage who could not stop laughing at the price.
