Rebel emblem, droid and rose design

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a winged-style emblem above an inverted triangle, with a droid resembling R2-D2 on the right and a shaded rose with dark leaves on the left. The rose and droid use fine ink outlines with stippled dotwork shading, while the emblem and leaves are solid black fills. The design is entirely in black ink on pale paper, with a pen lying across the lower right corner.

Dear Hal, the lamp went out again on Tuesday, and this time it was Ruth who found the wick fused to the glass, not the tin fellow. I know you will say I should have sent for the mainland engineer. I did send. The letter went on the Thursday boat and came back stamped not known at this address, so either Mr Pell has retired to his sister's in Penzance or he has simply stopped answering post from rocks like ours.

The little machine we fished out of the Scarr gully last winter has been climbing our stairs ever since, with its white dome and its ring of blue lenses and that wing-and-bar crest scratched into the side where the paint wore off. The children call it Wren. It does not talk, but it hums when it is pleased, and on Tuesday evening it hummed the whole way up the tower with a rag in one hand and the oil can in the other.

I followed it up, because I wanted to see whether it would manage the brass without a fuss. It did not go to the lamp first. It stopped at the window beside the stove, where the rose you planted the year you left has finally come into flower. The bloom is dark red and very nearly black at the centre, and the frost had outlined every petal in silver. Wren bent its dome towards that bloom and stayed there for a long minute, quite still, the way you used to stand when you thought nobody was looking. Then it turned, climbed the last ladder, and had the wick clear and trimmed in twelve minutes.

I am keeping the light burning tonight on the spare paraffin and the machine's own careful hands. If the Tuesday boat ever brings you home, you will find the beam still turning, the rose still open by the stove, and Wren waiting at the bottom of the stairs as though it had always known which way you would come.
