Stormtrooper sugar skull with roses
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A line drawing of a Stormtrooper helmet with sugar skull detailing, including a heart on the forehead, empty eye sockets and a decorated jaw. Two open roses with leaves sit on either side of the helmet, framing the composition. The work uses black linework with light grey shading on white paper, with no colour ink.

The last dance at the Palomar was always the one Mireille called for, and nobody argued with her after the lamps went low. She stood by the bandstand with a chipped enamel tray of marigolds, selling them for a penny a stem to anyone who would dance with a flower behind one ear. The dockers from Pell Street came in their Sunday collars, and the girls from the laundry came in borrowed shoes, and every one of them looked up at the helmet hung above the stage like it was a saint they had been told not to stare at.

Nobody knew where it had come from. Old Harrow swore it had washed up in a crate of tinned peaches off the Lisbon boat, and that the paint on the forehead was still wet when he found it. Someone had pressed a red heart onto the brow, and someone else had drawn a sugar-skull jaw across the visor, all filigree and candy lace, so the thing grinned at the room with its empty eyes while the roses on either side kept their petals open as though the music had asked them to.
On the night the rain came sideways off the river, a sailor in a wet greatcoat walked in and stopped dead under the helmet. He had a bruise on his knuckles and a letter in his breast pocket he would not show anyone. Mireille handed him a marigold without asking. He turned it over twice, then tucked it under the brim of his cap and asked her, quite plainly, whether the helmet had ever been wanted back.
"Every night," she said, and pointed the tray at the dance floor. "Go on. It only watches the ones who don't dance."
