Black lettering tattoo in a serif script reading 'i spent my life folded between the pages of books' runs along a forearm resting on an open book.

Book quote script on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm rests across an open book, with a single line of black serif script tattooed along it reading 'i spent my life folded between the pages of books'. The lettering is crisp and fine, with even spacing that follows the curve of the arm. The blurred book pages and colourful eye artwork on the covers behind it are out of focus, keeping attention on the tattoo.

Dear Sol,

The lift is out again, so I carried the box of your father's paperbacks down to the hub on foot and had to stop on every landing like a woman climbing a hill in a film. Fourteen floors. I counted the steps to keep my chest from complaining, twenty-two to each landing, and by the bottom I had lost the thread of it entirely.

Precious at the desk, the one with the reading glasses on a beaded chain, asked whether I wanted to donate or swap. I said I wanted the ones he'd marked to go to someone who would argue with them. She laughed and wrote the titles on a card in biro, then kept the card in the till drawer like it was worth something, which it was.

The last one was the Maigret. Between pages ninety and ninety-one I found a bus ticket from 1974, a receipt for a kettle, and a slip in his handwriting that said: 'Keep reading, Nell. You always said you'd get round to it.' I never got round to much except you and the flat and the long shifts at the laundry. But I'm reading now, a chapter a night with my feet up on the radiator, the way he liked.

I have kept the one about the lighthouse. Come up in the summer and I'll show you where he sat, and we can argue about the ending properly over a pot of tea that tastes of the tap.

Love, Mum
