Botanical rose and scrollwork on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a large open rose with a detailed centre, surrounded by leaves, a mushroom-like shape and curling scrollwork that sweeps from the thigh over the hip. The linework is fine and dark, with soft grey shading in the leaves and petals that gives the design depth. The subject is shown in black and grey only, photographed from above on a white bed with the leg bent and partly covered by bedding.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The rain had been falling on the market at Thornbury since before the bells, and Mab Corran still had not sold the rose. It stood in a cracked jar on her trestle, one open bloom with a yellow heart, and the stallholders along the row kept telling her it was too fine for a wet Tuesday.

A tinker came by under a sack, stopped, and asked what it cost. She said a sound night's sleep. He laughed and said he had none to spare, but he would take it for a story. So she told him how her grandmother had carried the first cutting from the hedge at the foot of the moor, wrapped in wet moss inside her bodice, and how the bush had grown where the old gate used to be. Every leaf on it curled the way bindweed curls round a fence post, and the mushrooms came up in its shade without anyone planting them.
The tinker listened to the end. Then he said the rose was not for sale, because a thing grown from a gate is owed to the gate. He set a copper coin on the trestle beside the jar, wiped the rain from the petals with his thumb, and walked on up the hill toward the moor.
Mab picked up the coin. It was warm. When she looked back at the jar, the bloom had dropped a single petal onto the wood, and the leaves had crept over the lip of the jar and begun to curl around the stall's post.
