Botanical sprig on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A botanical sprig with pointed leaves, a cluster of berries and an open flower spreads outward in a V shape across the forearm. The linework is fine and crisp, with small stippled dots and light shading inside the leaves. The design is in black ink only, shown against pale skin and a plain grey background.

The rain has been coming sideways off the river since six, and by eleven the stalls at Claybank Market shine like wet slate. You are behind the trestle table with the bramble cuttings, tying each sprig with green garden twine because Mrs Okonedo swears it keeps the berries from splitting. Nobody has bought a bunch since the bell rang at nine. The canvas above you sags and drips into a bucket you have moved twice already.

Across the aisle, Tomasz, who sells secondhand records, shouts that he will give you a fiver for the lot if you stop looking so tragic. You laugh, because it is true, and because a man in a yellow cagoule has stopped at your table to shake water from his hood. He wants something for his sister's birthday. You have no roses, nor anything grand. You have the blackberry sprigs with their pointed leaves, a few hedge roses gone papery at the edges, and one stubborn bloom that opened in the greenhouse behind the bus shelter.

He chooses the sprig with the most berries, the ones still hard and red at the tips, and counts coins out of a sandwich bag. You wrap it in newspaper, then brown paper, then a carrier bag, because the rain will undo anything less. He thanks you and walks towards the station, and for a while you watch the yellow hood bob between umbrellas until it disappears.

When you look down, one berry is left on the table, fat and dark and beaded with rain. You pocket it, and by the time the market lights go off you have eaten it with your back against the van, sour and sweet, while the gutters run past the wheels towards the drain.
