Metallic temporary tattoos on hand and fingers
Geometric · Hand · Colour · Photo
A close crop shows a hand resting on a bare torso, with metallic gold and silver temporary tattoos across the back of the hand and along the fingers. The designs include a circular mandala, stacked chevron bands, rows of dots and small arrow motifs, drawn with simple, even outlines. The black bikini top, gold chain strap, rings and a white skirt frame the hand against a pale background.

Brother Anselm had told me the gold would not forgive a shaking hand, so I held my breath the way the old scribes did and laid the first leaf across the vellum like a breath over water. It lifted, trembled, and settled. The cut-glass dots I pressed with the ivory burnisher came next, forty to a row, because the abbot liked his borders counted.

Those first weeks I did nothing but chevrons. Bands of them, stacked like the roofs of a village after snow, each point turned the same way so the whole border seemed to march toward the margin. Anselm made me copy them forty times on scrap parchment before he would let me near the gilt. "A chevron is only a mistake that has been repeated with conviction," he said. I laughed, and he did not.
The commission came in the autumn: a psalter for the lady at the coast house, who wanted a mandala in the centre of her dedication page. I drew it three times. On the third I made the petals overlap, silver laid beside gold, so that where they met the light seemed to turn back on itself. Anselm studied it a long while, then said the lady would never notice the difference. That was how I knew it was right.
When the book went down the coast road in the carrier's cart, I found one flake of silver stuck to my thumb. I kept it under the lid of my ink pot for years, a small bright arrow pointing nowhere, and I still tap it sometimes when I am waiting for a line to dry.
