Bottle with a flower sprig on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A slender bottle with a sprig of small leaves and tiny flowers rising from its neck is drawn in delicate single-line work. The linework is thin and uniform in purple ink, with only light shading on the leaves and petals. The tattoo sits on pale skin against a dark background, with the bottle angled diagonally across the forearm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been told twice that the bottle was too narrow to carry anything worth the walk, and she carried it anyway, down the lane past the chapel with its wet slate roof. She had wrapped the neck in a damp handkerchief to keep the cold out. Inside sat two sprigs of elder and a stem of thyme, cut from the wall behind her mother's kitchen before the frost could get to them.

Mrs Harrow at the end cottage had not left her bed since Michaelmas. Nell's mother had said that a thing given in a bottle lasts longer than a thing given in a hand, because a bottle keeps its shape and a hand forgets what it was holding. Nell did not understand this, but she had decided to believe it, the way you believe the kettle will boil if you watch it long enough.

At the door the old woman's grandson took the bottle without a word and turned it against the grey light from the window. "Thyme," he said. "Nobody's grown thyme on this lane since Dad." Nell shrugged. From the back room came a dry, impatient cough, and then Mrs Harrow's voice asking whether the elder had come from the south wall. Nell said it had. She said it always did.

The old woman laughed, then coughed, then laughed again. When Nell left, the bottle stayed on the sill by the bed, its neck full of green, and Nell walked home with empty hands, which was the first thing she had ever been glad to leave behind.
