Bow and arrow on the inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a bow and arrow sits on the inner forearm near the wrist. The bow is a single thin curved line and the arrow is drawn with fine lines and a small feathered tail, with a solid triangular tip. The photograph is black and white, with a blurred framed sugar skull artwork behind the arm.

Keep your hands in the flour and don't look at the window yet, the sky isn't ready for you. I'll tell it while the first tray proves. My mother kept this oven lit the winter the archer came to Scarrow Lane, a thin man with a longbow he never let out of his sight, and he paid for his bread in arrows.

He would not say where he'd learned to shoot. Each dawn he stood in the yard behind the bakery and loosed one shaft over the mill roof, and the flour dust hung in the cold air like smoke from a struck match. My mother baked his loaf in the shape of a bow, curved and split, because that was the only shape he asked for. Nobody in Scarrow thought it strange until the baker's boy went missing up on the moor.
The archer walked down at first light with the boy's cap in his hand. He said nothing. He only set an arrow to the string, drew it back, and let it fly over the wall into the frost. We found it in the morning, stuck point-first in the yard gate, and the boy was sitting on the step beneath it eating a heel of the bow-shaped loaf, grinning as if he'd never been lost at all.
Now lift that tray out, and mind the heat, because the sun is coming up behind the mill and it has never once waited for anybody.
