Two arrows on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows a close-up of a pale shoulder and upper back, with blonde hair falling at the top left. Two small arrows run in parallel across the skin, each with a faceted or diamond-shaped head, a shaft with notches or a cross mark, and a feathered tail. The lines are thin and precise, with grey shading inside the arrowheads and fletching, and the composition is centred on the shoulder area.

The rain had found the gap in the awning again, and Dora Hale shifted the trestle table six inches to the left so the drip fell on the cardboard box instead of the feathers. Forty years of selling fletching from this pitch in Brackle Street market had taught her that the weather never stopped, only changed its mind about where to land.

The boy who came at half past three wanted two arrows, not one. He had a leather tube under his arm and a carrier bag with a tin of pennies, and he counted them onto the wet wood in piles of ten. "They have to match," he said. "Exactly the same. My nan's got a bow that was my granddad's, and she says it only shoots straight if the pair are twins."

Dora took two ash shafts from the rack and notched them with the little saw she had kept since her father's day. She set the diamond heads with a dab of resin, then fixed three goose quills to each shaft, trimmed so the tails swept the same way. The notches came out as a single cross-mark on both, which she did without thinking, the way her hand had always done it.

When she handed them over, the boy studied the heads, then looked up at her. "You've made them as one," he said. She told him that was the trick of a pair: they didn't have to be identical, only pointed the same way. He tucked them under his arm and walked off into the rain, and she watched until the grey swallowed him, then wiped the table dry with her sleeve.
