Boxing gloves with quote on thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A pair of red boxing gloves hangs by their laces beneath a black line-drawn bow, with the words "You've got more fight left in you" set in black hand-lettering above and below the gloves. The gloves have bold black outlines, dark red shading and pale grey highlights on the cuffs, and the tattoo sits centred on the outer thigh against a plain background.

In the seventh century after the Drowning, the town of Sallow Reach kept a pair of red leather gloves in the rafters of its bathhouse. Their laces hung down like pale roots, and a black ribbon was tied above them in a bow that nobody had ever seen undone. Old people said the gloves had belonged to a boxer who lost every bout but one, and that the one he won was against himself.

Dorrit Vane, a ferry-woman with knuckles like walnuts, came to the bathhouse the year her husband went under the ice. She climbed the ladder with a stool and a bad knee and took the gloves down. The rafter creaked. A gull cried outside. She pulled the bow loose with her teeth and laced the gloves onto her own hands, which were far too small for them.
All that winter she walked to the lake at dawn and struck the ice-wall, one blow and then another, until her shoulders sang. The village laughed at first and then stopped laughing. Each morning the bow was tied again on the rafter, though no one saw her do it. On the last thaw she walked to the far shore, where the ferry rope was frozen, and cut it through with a knife.
When the thaw broke, a rowing boat came up the channel with one man aboard, thin as a mast, who did not remember the sea or his own name. Dorrit went down to the jetty with the gloves still on her hands. He looked at them the way a man looks at weather. "You've got more fight left in you," she told him, and he began, slowly, to laugh.
