Constellation tattoo across upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A bare upper back with a constellation design of small dots joined by fine black lines, forming two star patterns, one over each shoulder blade. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the ink is dark against the skin. The soft, warm-toned photograph is framed close on the shoulder, with loose curls falling over the neck.

The chart had been pricked out by candle in the back room of the chandler's, and Ada Penrose was still picking tallow from her nib when the master of the Nell Garrow came in out of the rain to ask whether the sky over Hull could be trusted. Her father had made charts for forty years and had always said the stars were only dots that men had agreed to join. Ada did not agree with him. She took a fine pen and a bottle of black ink and drew her own lines between the bright points over the shoulder of the sea, one shape like a kite with a broken tail, the other like a square gate left open at the bottom.

The master laughed at her and took the chart anyway, because the rain was heavy and his own book was water-stained past reading. On the third night out a squall came down from the north and took the topsail off its yard. The mate swore the lamps had gone and nobody could see the Dogger bank. The master stood at the wheel with Ada's paper pinned under a lantern and steered by the kite and the gate, though the lines were wrong. Ada had joined stars that were not neighbours at all, and the gate pointed at nothing in the heavens he had been taught.

But the gap between the dots was honest, and the sea respects an honest gap. The Nell Garrow came up on the harbour light at dawn, exactly where the open bottom of the gate had said it would be. Afterwards the master nailed the chart to the galley wall above the stove, where the grease gathered on its corners. Nobody on board ever told him that the constellations he trusted were only what someone had decided to connect.
