Constellation tattoo across a back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A bare upper back with curly auburn hair falling over one shoulder. Fine black linework forms two constellation-style patterns of small dots joined by thin lines, one over the shoulder blade and one near the edge of the shoulder. The warm, soft-focus photograph has a muted palette, with the skin and ink set against a blurred beige background.

Nell had been in the lambing shed since eleven, and by two the cold had got into her hands. The grey-faced Swaledale in pen four had been straining since supper and had produced nothing but one hoof. Nell did not like the look of it. She rang the vet, then walked out to the gate to wait, because the lane was unlit and the van would come up it with its full beam on.

While she waited she looked up. The sky over the top field was clearer than it had been all month, frost-hard and crowded with points, and she counted them the way her grandfather had taught her, joining the bright ones with lines she could only see in her head. The Plough was easy. Under it sat the hunter's belt, three stars in a row, and she remembered him tracing them on the Land Rover's misted window with one gloved finger, telling her they were the only things on the farm that never needed feeding.

The van came up at twenty past three. Ruth Okonedo, who had delivered half the lambs in the valley, went in without a word and came out with a pink-legged lamb steaming in a towel. A second followed, and it did not breathe. Ruth rubbed it with straw until Nell thought the straw would wear through, and then it coughed, and then it was looking about with a dark wet eye, as if someone had only just asked it a question.

At dawn Nell wrote the night's tally on the back of the feed invoice, the way her grandfather had kept his accounts. Two lambs, both living. Ewe, just. Beneath it she drew a small crooked shape, joining three ear tags with a pencil line until they made a belt in the frost. The sky was going pale over the hill behind the barn, and the kettle was already whistling in the farmhouse.
