A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You learn the pipe before you learn the furnace. Demetrios sets a cold rod in your hands in the glass quarter of Alexandria, where the air tastes of ash and sea salt, and tells you the molten gather will not wait for your nerves. Breathe in, he says, and you draw the warm air down until your ribs ache. Breathe in.

For a month you blow bubbles that sag into lopsided lumps, and he drops each failure into a clay bowl by the door without comment. Your palms blister on the marver. A boy from the next shop laughs through the party wall. Demetrios never laughs. When your bottle finally swells round and thin as a pomegranate seed, he turns the pipe in his fingers and says only, Now let it go.

The trick, he tells you later, is that the breath you release is what gives the glass its shape. He sits across the bench with his wrists flat on the wood, and you notice the words he has pricked into his skin with soot and a bone needle, the second turned so you can read it from your side. You read them without meaning to, the way you read a bill of sale, and you understand that he has been reminding himself of this for forty years.

Years later you have a shop of your own. A girl with burned fingers stands at your bench, gripping the pipe too hard, holding her breath until her face goes red. You lift your own wrists so she can see the words, then touch them with two fingers. She frowns, then breathes. You watch the small bottle swell, and you let it go.
