Let it be script with wave on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot rests on a wooden boardwalk, showing a black script tattoo that reads let it be, with a thin wave line curling beneath and around the words. The linework is delicate and even, and the ink is solid black with no colour. Sunlight and lens flare fill the background with green trees, and a thin chain anklet sits above the tattoo.

Dear Nell, the tide had the causeway again on Tuesday, and Mr Pardoe's van went under to the axles before anyone thought to shout. You'll say I should have put the sign out sooner. I did. The sign has been lying in the reeds since the storm, its letters gone the colour of weak tea, and I haven't had the heart to stand it back up.

Dad would have hauled Pardoe out by his collar and then made him a cup of tea. I tried that. Pardoe wanted to argue about the wave height, which he had read about in a paper, and I told him the sea doesn't read the paper. He kept insisting the marker posts were wrong. I let him. Not every quarrel needs winning, and the water was coming up at a steady walk.
Last night I sat on the seawall with the dog and watched the swell fold itself over the mudflats, grey, then silver, then gone. Every wave arrives with its own small argument and then lies down. I caught myself saying the old words Mam used to stitch on her samplers. Let it be. I'm not sure whether I meant the sea, or Pardoe, or you and me not speaking since the funeral.
This morning the tide had pulled back to the far posts, and the sign was still in the reeds. I left it there. Come up at Easter if you can. Bring the good kettle, and tell me about the dog you've been pretending you don't want.
