Black script tattoos reading Beautiful Mother and Beautiful Daughter run along the ankles and feet of two people against a white background.

Matching script tattoos on two ankles

Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet, one lifted onto its toes, show black script lettering that reads Beautiful Mother on the left and Beautiful Daughter on the right. The letters are smooth, fairly fine strokes with even shading and no colour. The white backdrop and warm floor keep the focus on the ink, with the lettering running diagonally along each foot.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tins of enamel are stacked by the caravan step, their lids rusted to the rims, and your mother is already up the ladder when you arrive at the Lowther Brothers' pitch on Sunday morning. She has a script brush no thicker than a hair between two fingers and she is working the scroll on the Helter Skelter board without looking down. "Hold the ladder," she says, "and tell me where I've gone wrong."

You squint up at the board. The flourish on the capital B has bled a little into the paint beneath, and you say so, and she laughs and tells you that is what the wet is for. She teaches you the trick her own mother taught her: thin the stroke on the way up, let the brush run out of ink just before the end, so the letter seems to lift off the wood. Your arm aches by noon. The generator coughs and catches again, and somewhere down the field the waltzer begins its tinny tune.

Mr Lowther comes round at dusk with his hat in his hand and a paper bag of sugared almonds for the girl who painted the new sign. Your mother says nothing, only lifts her chin towards you, and he counts out the money into her palm as though it were a joke between them that you are both in on.

By the time the fair packs up for Tuesday's field, the enamel has set hard. The two names sit side by side on the caravan door, each stroke tapering to nothing at its tail, as if the whole lettering might one morning slide off the panel and go looking for the road.
