Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows the word Breathe in black cursive script across the centre of a large infinity symbol. The infinity loop is shaded in soft pink and purple, and thin red and black swirling lines with small dots extend outward from it. The composition runs across the inside of the forearm, with the colour and linework balanced on both sides of the lettering.

The galley of the herring boat Lantern Rose was the warmest place on the Moray Firth in February, and Mags Tulloch kept it that way by feeding the range with driftwood and saying nothing to anyone who came down the ladder wet. The boy Ewan had come aboard at Wick with a cough and a habit of holding his breath whenever the sea came green over the bow.

"You'll drown yourself sooner than the fish do," she said, and set him to kneading. The dough had to be folded over and over, pulled long and rolled back on itself, a loop that never ended, she told him, and bread only rose if the air got in. Each time he stopped to hold his breath she rapped the board with a wooden spoon. Breathe, she'd say, the way you'd call the time.

The winter the Lantern Rose went out past the Smith Bank and the wind came round on the third night, Ewan was sent below to bank the fire while the men hauled. The hatch slammed, the lamp swung on its hook, and he found himself gripping the table edge with his chest locked tight. He heard her voice as clear as the spoon on wood, and he let the air out slow, then in, slow, the way the dough had taught him, folding each breath over the last.

When the boat limped into Wick at dawn he found three loaves cooling on the rack, split golden along the top, and a pencilled slip under the first that read only: the loop is yours now. Mags had gone ashore on the morning tide and never sailed again, and Ewan kept the slip in his oilskin for the rest of his working life.
