A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody warned me the pier arcade had a gremlin living in the coin tray until Dennis fed it a pound coin at ten to midnight and the whole cabinet started to growl. I was the only repairman in Margate who would answer the phone at three in the morning, so I was sent down the pier with a torch, a spanner and a jar of Marmite, which Dennis swore was the only thing that calmed them.

The creature was no bigger than a tabby cat, white and furred, with a face like a bulldog that had lost an argument. It sat on the Game Boy's screen and blinked at me with eyes like wet pennies. "Rule one," I said, because I had read the sign taped above the change machine, and it said so in red capitals. "No feeding after midnight." The gremlin opened a mouth full of teeth, ignored the Marmite and took the eight ball off the pool table with one paw. It rolled the ball down the boards towards me, slow and deliberate, while the lettering on the wall behind it flickered from STOP to BUSTED and back again.

"Game of pool," it said, in a voice like a cigarette being crushed. I have never been good at pool. I lost the first frame badly and the second worse, and by the third the sea had gone grey through the window and the gremlin was cracking its knuckles on the felt. Then it was my turn with the black, I potted it on the break by accident, and the room went very quiet.

The creature climbed down, looked me over and sighed like a landlord. It curled up in the coin tray with a pound coin under one paw and fell asleep before the first gulls came in. I scraped the Marmite off the spanner, shut the cabinet and left the bolt undone. Dennis still swears it was me who fed it. He is probably right.
