Brown monkey design on a lower abdomen
Other · Colour · Photo
A cartoon monkey with a curled tail is shown in a single brown ink on tanned skin, with a smaller monkey-like figure at its centre. The linework is bold and simple, with solid fills and no shading. The design sits low on the abdomen above a patterned yellow and brown bikini bottom, against a blurred beach background.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the pigeons, they've had their eye on your crisps since the four ten came in. This is about the monkey who lived in the clock tower at Ashby Junction, a brown little thing with a tail curled like a question nobody wanted to answer. She had a babe clutched to her belly, and she carried it everywhere, even up the signal ladder at dusk.

One November night the fog came down so thick the platform lamps were just smudges of butter. The last goods train was crawling in with no guard's lamp showing, the guard having dropped his lantern somewhere near the coal stacks. Mr Pell, the stationmaster, was shouting into his telephone and getting nothing but crackle. The monkey saw it all from the ladder. She hooked her tail round the points lever, heaved with her whole brown body, and sent the train safely onto the siding while her little one hollered encouragement from under her arm.
Mr Pell wanted her sent off to the zoo in Chester. The guard, a man called Dobbs who had once been bitten for taking a banana off her, stood in the office and said he'd sooner hand in his cap. So the monkey stayed. Every night after, Dobbs left a ginger biscuit on the bench at the end of the platform, and every night the monkey came down, took one bite, and tucked the rest under her arm for the babe.
The 11.40 has never run late since. People say it's the fog, or the signals, or the new gauge, but the porters know better, and so does the little one, who has grown a tail of her own.
