Cartoon dog and vine on lower back

Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon dog with grey shading, a white muzzle and a small touch of red sits at the centre of the lower back. Thin black swirling vines with small blue-grey flowers trail out to either side of the dog. The skin tone and tattoo sit above a studded black belt and light blue jeans, shot straight on.

The dog started life on the back of a fish-box lid, drawn in carpenter's pencil while the ferry idled at the slip on Inish Morrow. Mrs Gallagher wanted a sign for her bakery, something to tell the tourists the ovens were lit, and I had never drawn anything in my life that wasn't a boat. So I gave her a dog with one ear up and one ear down, a grey coat I shaded with the side of the lead, and a red tongue that made the children laugh.

She hung it in the window for a week. Then the gulls got into the flour, the board warped in the damp, and she told me to do a better one. I did not. I climbed the hill to the walled garden where the honeysuckle had gone wild and sat on a stone with a biro, drawing the dog again on the back of a ferry timetable. This time I let vines spill out either side of him, looping and doubling back until the page looked like a mended net, and I gave each loop a small blue flower with five petals, because my mother had stitched flowers like that into every coat she owned.

Mrs Gallagher never put the second drawing up. She said it was too busy for a bakery. The timetable went into my coat pocket and stayed there through two winters, and when I finally took it out the dog had gone soft at the folds, his tongue faded to pink. I pinned him to the bakery wall anyway, above the door, where the damp could have him. By spring the honeysuckle had reached across from the garden and found its way over his ears.
