Ruth had the brass scales down from the beam before the frost had lifted off the yard. Her brother Tom stood in the barn doorway with his hands in his coat pockets, watching the pans shiver on their chains.

Their father had left them a quarrel instead of a will: forty acres of sour pasture, thirty-one ewes, and a tin of seed potatoes that neither of them wanted to claim. They weighed the potatoes first, one tuber at a time, because that was how the old man had always done it. The sound ones went on the left pan, the split and soft ones on the right. Tom called it foolishness. Ruth said it was the only thing their father had ever done slowly.

By noon the beam had settled level more often than not. Snow started to drift through the open door and collect on the sacks. Tom wanted the ewes counted instead, and Ruth lifted a blackened potato from the left pan and dropped it on the right. The beam dipped, held, and trembled on its pin. Neither of them spoke. Outside, a ewe bleated once across the field and was answered by nothing.

When the last sack was tied and the tin was empty, the beam hung perfectly level with nothing on either pan. Tom looked at it for a long time. Then he laughed, a short surprised sound that the snow swallowed before it reached the yard, and he reached up to steady the chain with one finger.
