Walter had been counting the steps out loud since the first bar, and Ada let him, because counting was the only thing he did well when he was nervous. The sprung floor of the Majestic gave a little under their feet, and the lamps above the balcony swung on their chains each time the door opened to let in the cold from Anlaby Road. He kept his hand firm at her back, steering her the way the card in his jacket pocket had told him to. Ada had read that card twice and then put it in the bin behind the cloakroom.

The trombonist was leaning into a long, curling phrase, his bell tipped up like a bull lowering its head. Ada watched the brass curve and thought of her mother saying that anyone born in the second half of April would dig in their heels until the world gave way. She had never believed in such things, but she had certainly dug in. When the band wheeled into the chorus, Walter began to lead her into the tight turn he had practised in his mother's kitchen, and Ada stopped dead on the boards and pushed back against him.

For a second the whole floor kept spinning around them. Then the couples began to slow, one pair at a time, drifting to the edges to watch. Walter's mouth opened and closed. Ada took his hand, turned under his arm, and drew him the other way round, so that they circled the room in a wide, loosening coil while the trombone dropped to its last low note. When the music stopped they were standing exactly where they had begun, only facing the opposite wall, and he was laughing too hard to count anything at all.
