Thursday, two in the morning, and the bay still smells of cherry shampoo. Gordon wanted the sign finished before the council man came round, so I sat on an upturned bucket with the enamel tins and worked the bubbles up round the big F first, because the F is the bit people read from the bus.

Gordon kept leaning in the doorway with his tea, saying he'd wanted FRESH SUDS, not whatever this is. I told him the lettering was coming out the way the brush wanted, and that the brush had opinions of its own. Then the foam machine coughed, sprayed the lot, and I had to redo the highlight on the second line by the light of the hose.

By the time the sky went grey over the bypass, the words had their shine on. I'd run stripes down the strokes like somebody had blown through them with a straw. Gordon read it twice, didn't say a word, then nodded and paid me in a bacon roll and forty quid.

Filthy Douche, it says now, in fat, cloud-edged letters over the bay. Nobody in the queue has asked what it means. I think they can tell it's been done properly.
