You'll not believe what Duncan won off the Tuesday men at the Lamplighter. Not money, mind. A bulldog called Major, who sat under the back bar with a flat cap jammed on his head like he'd bought the place. Duncan had put his shilling on the racing pigeon and lost, and the cap was the forfeit, so Major came with it, scarf and all. The old tailor who owned him had knitted the scarf from offcuts of a green and brown tweed bolt and wouldn't part with one without the other.

The dog has opinions. He will not go past the church steps, he takes the cap off only for gravy, and every evening at half past six he walks to the harbour wall and stares at the lighthouse as if it owes him rent. Duncan says it's the pigeon's ghost. I say it's the gold eye, which looks at you like it has already counted your change and found you short.

Last Sunday the tailor's grandson came asking for the dog back. Major wouldn't budge. He sat down on the end of the scarf, grinning under that great white jowl, and the lad, who'd been a bit of a mouth all his life, just laughed and said keep him then, the old man would have wanted a bulldog with a good hat. So he's ours now. Come up at Easter and you can meet him properly. He'll pretend he doesn't like you, which means you're in.
