Pug in top hat and monocle on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A pug dog in a black top hat with a red band and purple feather, a monocle on a chain, a dark jacket and a red cravat, set inside a gold ornate frame. The linework is bold with smooth colour shading on the dog's fur and eyes, and a blue background behind the frame. The design fills the frame centrally, with the scrolled border curving around the figure.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sea has been trying to get into the Marigold for forty years, and Mrs Haddow has been keeping it out with mops and a firm rule about animals. You have never once been seen on the stairs without your hat. You are Mr Ambrose Tulley, retired schoolmaster, and every morning the hat is brushed and set on the landing windowsill so the gulls cannot leave their opinions on it.

The trouble starts on a wet Tuesday, when the chambermaid finds a monocle on its chain in the bath and a note tucked under the pantry tin. The note reads: The gentleman in number four requests kippers at eight, and no further mention of spaniels. Mrs Haddow reads it twice, glares at the hallstand where your feather is drying, and sighs like a kettle coming to the boil.

She climbs the stairs with the tray herself. You open the door before she can knock, the glass screwed into your eye and your cravat perfectly tied. Madam, you say, I believe we have been misunderstanding one another since June. She looks at the tray, then at you, then at the wet feather drooping from the brim of your hat.

She sets the tray down on the washstand and takes off her apron. Then she sits in the only armchair, pours two cups of stewed tea without asking how you take it, and pushes the kippers across the table towards you with one finger.
