Nobody at Coldharbour Primary believed the chrysalis would open, least of all Owen Pryce, who had decided by Tuesday that the pale green thing hanging from the jar lid was a dud. He said so at the back of the classroom, loudly, while Mrs Abernethy was counting the milk crates.

She didn't argue. She carried the jar to the window ledge, where the March light came in sideways across the sill, and tapped the glass with one fingernail. The word she had written on the lid in marker, in her looping hand, had already started to fade. Believe, it said. She told him it wasn't written for the chrysalis. It was for whoever had to sit beside it every morning and wait.

Owen went home that night and drew a butterfly on the back of his maths book, blue wings edged in heavy black ink, then crossed it out because it looked too neat. In the morning there was a fine crack along the seam of the lid, and a damp, folded shape inside was trying to straighten itself.

By lunch the whole class was crowded round the glass. The wings unfolded slowly, the colour of a summer sky held up to a lamp, and Owen stood at the back and didn't say a word. Mrs Abernethy wrote nothing on the board that afternoon. She didn't need to.
