Buzz Lightyear with galaxy on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the cartoon character Buzz Lightyear in a white and green space suit, flying with a purple and red jetpack and one arm pointed forward. A blue ringed planet, white star sparkles and a dark purple and teal galaxy fill the background, with curved banners above and below reading 'TO INFINIT...' and 'AND BEYOND'. The bold outlines and saturated colours are applied with soft shading across the figure and background.

The spaceman had lost one arm to the washing machine and his visor to the dog, so when Nell Sadler pressed him into her brother's hands on the platform at Hollin Cross, nobody thought he would go far. Danny was eleven and had been promised he could stop being frightened of the dark if he kept the toy in his coat pocket. He held the little man up against the station clock and squinted at the painted sky on his chest, the purple wing, the green trim, the blue ringed planet, the silver banners curling above and below.

The train to Hebden was late. A woman in a wet headscarf asked what the thing was, and Danny said it was a man who had been to the moon and come back, which was not true, but she nodded as though that was the sort of thing people did. Nell had a job at the mill in Sheffield starting Monday, and a suitcase tied shut with washing line, and their gran had said the boy was not to go to the end of the platform on his own. He had watched the train's lamps shrink along the cutting until the porter asked him to move along.

Nell had said the words to him that morning, bent low so her breath fogged the plastic, and then she had laughed at herself for saying them. Danny did not laugh. He leaned his forehead on the cold glass of the waiting room door and held the spaceman up to the sky over the goods yard, where the first stars were coming out above the gasworks. He wiped a clear patch in the condensation with his sleeve and pressed the little man against it, pointing his one good arm the way she'd taught him.

'To infinity,' he said, and then, because the platform was empty and nobody was listening, 'and beyond.'
