Cat, moon and galaxy on an upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A cat with a blue-grey head and orange tabby markings sits in front of a full moon, with green crystal clusters below its paws. The background is a swirling galaxy in purple, teal, orange and red, with soft shading that fades toward the edges of the design. The image shows the same upper arm twice, side by side, in a close crop with a dark top visible at the sides.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The keep at Hallowmere had lost its roof to a winter storm forty years before, and nobody in the village below thought to climb after the cat. Only Ilse did, with a lantern hooked to her belt and her hair tied tight against the wind. The stairs were gone above the second landing, so she went up the ivy one hand at a time until she came out under open sky.

The cat was waiting on the broken parapet, half in moonlight and half in shadow. One side of her was the grey-blue of cold pewter, the other the orange of a hearth banked low. Beside her paws lay a cluster of green crystals, each as long as a finger, and they gave off a faint hum when Ilse set her lantern down. 'You've been taking them from the cellar,' Ilse said. 'Mrs Carrow says those stones are all that keeps the well from freezing.'

The cat did not answer. She nudged one crystal toward the gap in the wall where the moon hung low and swollen, and the light inside the stone brightened to match it. Ilse understood then that the moon had been lending its light for years, and that the cat had been paying it back in pieces, one stone a month, carried up the ivy in her teeth.

Ilse knelt and pushed the last crystal across the stones toward the moon. 'Then take this one too,' she said. The cat blinked slowly. Behind the parapet the sky seemed to turn once, like a wheel finding its groove, and far below, the village well began to ring with warm water.
