Colour neo-traditional tattoo of Sulley, Mike Wazowski and Boo from Monsters Inc inside a heart frame of pink beads on the thigh.

Monsters Inc characters in a heart on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

Sulley, Mike Wazowski and Boo from Monsters Inc sit inside a heart outlined with pink beads and a gold edge. Bold black outlines define the characters, with soft shading on their blue and green bodies against a pink background. Lettering in the lower part of the heart and along the left side reads as part of the design, and the tattoo is shown on a fair-skinned upper leg.

Third time this week the door tokens had jammed, and Sulley was halfway into a kip on the scare-floor sofa when I came running with the clipboard. 'It's the yellow one,' I said. 'It's always the yellow one.' He didn't open his eyes. He just pointed a paw at the vending machine and grunted something that sounded like a fridge settling.

We had the thing fixed by half past two. Then came the bit nobody puts in the brochure: the walk down the long corridor to Door 4, with its little pink light over the handle. Boo had taped a drawing to it, a crayon Sulley covered in too many spots and a me with one enormous eye. Underneath she'd written, letters climbing uphill, that she wasn't scared of the dark, only of the bit where it stopped being dark.

I stood there longer than I'd admit. Sulley came up behind me, all fur and quiet. 'You can go in,' he said. 'She knows you're here.' 'I know she knows,' I said. 'I'm not sure I know.' He laughed, low, the way a wardrobe might if it had a sense of humour, then stepped past me and pushed the door open with one finger.

Boo was asleep with one arm trailing off the bed, pointing at the crescent-moon nightlight we'd left on the floor. I flicked it on. The heart on her wall glowed pink. Down the corridor the machines hummed the way they do when everyone has gone home except the two of us. 'Right,' Sulley said. 'Tomorrow, the yellow door.' 'Always the yellow door,' I said, and for once it sounded like the start of something rather than the end.
