Cabin and mountains heart tattoo on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A cabin with a chimney and a trailing wisp of smoke sits in the centre of a heart-shaped frame, surrounded by pine trees, snowy-looking mountains and a pale moon in a blue sky. The cabin and trees are shaded in grey and black with bold outlines, while the sky, mountains and scalloped gold border use blue, teal and yellow. The words Don't be afraid and We're going home sit above and below the heart in black lettering on a plain skin background.

Snow had stopped at dusk, and the moon came up over the ridge pale as a dropped coin. Maggie Holt counted pine trunks to keep from counting the hours. Her brother Tom had stopped asking how far an hour ago, which frightened her more than the cold did.

Their mother had said the cabin lay a day's walk past the frozen lake, but a day had become two, and then three. Maggie's boots were split at the toe, so she had wrapped them in their father's old scarf. Each time the wind dropped she heard the lake ice groan somewhere behind them, a sound like a door being opened very slowly by someone who did not want to be heard.

Tom stumbled on a root and went down on his knees in the drift. She hauled him up and crouched beside him, and for a moment neither of them spoke. Then he lifted one mitten and pointed at the next rise, where the mountains stood black against the stars.

Above the tallest pines, a thin grey thread was climbing into the still air. Maggie watched it bend, fray and thicken again, the way it always did when Mam fed the stove with split larch. She took her brother's hand. 'Don't be afraid,' she said, which was what Mam always said, and this time she believed it, because the smoke was real, the path was there, and somebody had already lit the lamp in the window.
