Neo-traditional heart-shaped tattoo on the thigh showing a cabin with lit windows, pine trees and snowy mountains under a starry sky.

Mountain cabin night scene in a heart

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A heart-shaped tattoo shows a cabin with lit windows beside a snowy slope, with pine trees on the left and jagged mountains behind. The sky is shaded from deep blue to pink and purple, with white dots for stars, and the scene is framed by a bold black outline. The palette is saturated and the shading is smooth within the bold outlines, set against plain skin.

The lamp in the upper window has been burning since six, and you keep turning the wick down because the oil is dear this winter. The timber house above the drift mouth is the one your grandfather built from pit props nobody wanted, and from here you can see the whole valley: a handful of yellow squares strung along the river, and past the pines the mountains gone the colour of a bruise, then of a plum, with the sky above them clearing from blue to pink and the stars coming out one at a time as if someone is counting them.

Your brother is late off the afternoon shift. You have been listening for his boots on the cinder path since the bell at the top of the cwm rang five. The snow has filled the wagon tracks and laid the slope flat and white. You take the storm lantern out to the wooden steps, and the cold catches in your throat the way it always does up here, sharp enough to make your eyes water.

Halfway down you find him sitting on the bottom step with his helmet in his lap. He is not hurt, only tired, and he is looking up at the house as though he has never seen it from outside. "Look at it," he says. "Lights on. Somebody's waiting." You tell him the oil is nearly gone. He laughs, and the laugh hangs white in the air between you.

He takes the lantern and you take his other hand, and together you climb back toward the two lit windows, which from the valley floor, he says, must look like a heart someone has pinned to the hill.
