Old Nan Affleck ran the galley of the herring boat Marigold for thirty-one winters, and she had one rule for the lads who came aboard green. Never say the word home at sea unless you meant to go there. The boys laughed. Then the Marigold lost her mainmast off the Faroes, and the cook's boy, Tam, a lad of fourteen with salt sores on his wrists, began saying it every hour like a prayer.

Nan did not scold him. She took a length of red ribbon from the drawer where she kept her darning and tied it in a bow around the handle of the bread knife. 'That's your lamp,' she said. 'Hold it up and the wind knows where the land is.' Tam did not believe a word, but he kept the ribbon in his oilskin pocket and felt for it whenever the deck heaved.

The Marigold limped into Lerwick eleven days later on a jury rig and a prayer. Tam went ashore with his wages, bought a loaf and a tin of peaches, and walked the cobbled road up to his mother's door. He knocked. Nobody came. A neighbour told him the family had gone to Aberdeen for the winter.

He sat on the step with the loaf in his lap until dark. Then, because he did not know what else to do, he untied the ribbon and tied it to the gatepost, the way Nan had tied it to the knife. Years later he came back to that post and found the ribbon still there, faded to the colour of a peach stone, and a light burning in the window behind it.
