Llama and cactus in traditional colour

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A llama wearing a red, yellow and black patterned saddle blanket and a red and yellow bridle stands beside a tall green cactus. Red flowers and green leaves fill the lower corners, and a teal background sits behind the figures. Bold black outlines frame the solid colour fills, with some shading on the llama's fur and hooves.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Paz had stitched the saddle blanket three winters running, red zigzags for the mountains and a yellow fringe for the sun, and she was not about to let Dolores leave the square without it. The llama stood her ground beside the tall cactus at the edge of the market, chewing with the air of a judge who had already reached her verdict.

"Just once round the square," Mateo pleaded, holding the lead rope with both hands. "The mayor is waiting by the bunting."

Dolores lowered her head, considered the red pompoms swinging from her bridle, and sneezed on his boots. Paz laughed so hard she had to sit on the water trough. Somewhere a brass band tuned up, badly, and the cactus seemed to lean in to listen, its thorny arms full of the day's dust.

Then the rope went slack. Dolores walked not to the mayor but to the flower seller on the corner, nosed a bunch of marigolds out of her bucket, and trotted back as if she had paid for them. Nobody argued. The woman sold her the whole bucket for a coin and a wink. Paz tied the last tassel straight and told Mateo that the llama had won, and he should stop pretending otherwise. The parade started an hour late, and Dolores led it with a marigold tucked behind one ear.
