Crystal ball with desert scene on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A crystal ball on a patterned stand shows a desert landscape with a flat-topped mesa, saguaro-style cacti and a pale moon in a purple and orange sky. Smoke-like clouds surround the orb, and bold black outlines define the shapes. Bright orange, purple, green and teal ink dominate, with soft shading on the clouds and glass.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The glass ball rolled off the trestle before Nell could catch it, and when she knelt in the wet grass behind Hawkhurst Fair to fetch it, the sky inside had already gone violet. Mrs Ferrier, who had sold fortunes from the same canvas booth since the war, did not look up from her tea. "Don't rub it," she said. "Sand gets in the lens."

Nell had bought the ball from her the week before for two shillings, on the understanding that it would show nothing the buyer did not already carry. She held it against the lamp. Inside, a flat-topped mesa stood over a plain of ochre, and a row of cacti leaned towards a moon the colour of pearl. Nell had never seen a desert. Her brother Tom had sailed for Arizona in 1921 and sent one postcard, which showed a mesa exactly like the one in the glass.

Each evening after that she turned the ball to the window and watched the cacti grow a little taller and the shadow of the rock creep across the sand. On the seventh night a figure came down the dune line, small as a pin, a bundle slung over one shoulder. Nell pressed her face to the glass until her breath clouded it. Then she set the ball in her carpet bag, pulled on her boots, and walked the four miles to catch the Thursday milk train.

At the ticket window in London the clerk asked where she was bound. "Where the moon sits low," she said. He looked at her for a long moment, then punched a single fare to Liverpool without asking anything more, as though he had heard the answer before.
