A cactus with a rounded body and upward-curving spines sits in a terracotta-style pot with horizontal banding. The cactus body is shaded with dense black dots and stipple, while the spines and pot outlines use bold black linework. The design is shown in black and grey, centred on a bare lower leg with a sock visible at the bottom edge.

Mrs Okonedo never trusted a plant she hadn't named, so the cactus got called Dennis the afternoon it came up the stairs of Harrow Court wrapped in a bath towel. Gary from the removals firm carried it the last flight with his arms held out like he was bringing a baby to a christening, swearing softly at every spine that found his sleeve.

The pot was the old kind, terracotta with a ring of banding round its belly where the clay had dried in layers. It had belonged to her husband's mother, who kept it on a sill in Lagos, then in Lewisham, and never once watered it on a schedule. Dennis had survived two moves, a cracked radiator and a winter in a cupboard. He didn't need much. He needed a window that faced south and a person who would forget him for a fortnight without taking it personally.

Mrs Okonedo set him on the sill of the back bedroom, turned him so his best side faced the glass, and went to put the kettle on. When she came back the light had crept across the lino, and the room had the particular hush of a place that has finally agreed to be lived in. A single pale spine had dropped onto the windowsill and lay there like a fishhook.

She didn't throw it away. She pressed it into the soil beside him out of habit, and in March a small green knuckle pushed up through the dark dirt, the first thing in that flat that had decided to stay.
