Mrs Okonedo's cactus had been a wedding present from a man who never came back for the pot. That was the first thing Dilys Parry said to the removal men, who had stacked the sofa against the hallway wall and were now eyeing the windowsill with the dull patience of people paid by the hour.

"Leave the little one," she said. "It doesn't travel well."

It was a terracotta pot with a white band round its rim, chipped at one side where a bread knife had once slipped, and inside it the cactus had two arms, one raised higher than the other, as if it had been hailing a bus for forty years and had only just given up on the bus. Dilys had watered it every Thursday since 1987 with the water left from the kettle, and she had never once let it flower, because the flowers, she believed, were a sort of showing off.

The taller removal man, who had a swallow gone soft at the edges on his own forearm, picked the pot up and sniffed at the soil as though it might be hiding something. "It's dry as a biscuit," he said.

"Then it's doing well," said Dilys, and she took it from him, wrapped it in the tea towel from the drawer, and carried it out to the van herself, the spines poking through the cotton like pins in a cushion. Behind her the empty house kept its windows open to the street, and the pale square on the sill where the pot had stood caught the late sun for nearly an hour before it faded.
