California palm sunset on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
A palm tree with orange coconuts, two orange hibiscus-style flowers and green leaves frame a purple sunset over a dark headland and turquoise sea. A scrolled banner reading CALIFORNIA sits along the bottom, with red and orange swirl detail beneath it. Bold black outlines and flat, saturated colour fills give the piece a classic American traditional look on the lower leg.

The coconuts were the first thing Mo Varley noticed when the Lark Marie came round the breakwater at San Pedro, four bunks short of a full crew and a fortnight behind her manifest. Three of them hung in a knot off a palm that looked as though it had been painted by someone who had only heard about palms. Mo said they were bombs. Dutch Sorensen said they were the only honest fruit in America.

We were paid off on the Tuesday and I did not go back aboard. I walked up the coast road with my kit bag and a pocket full of wages, past orange groves and a diner that sold pie for a nickel, until the road bent down toward the water and the sun was sitting on the horizon like a dropped coin. The sea had gone from grey to a green so bright it hurt. I sat on a dark rock with a bottle of ginger beer and watched the gulls skim the surf, thinking about Mo, who had sworn on his mother's Bible that he would ship out again by the end of the month.
Mo found me there at dusk, sunburnt and ridiculous, with a scrape across the back of one hand from a fight he would not describe. He sat down beside me without a word. We watched the purple drain out of the sky while the headland went black. Eventually he took a stub of pencil from his shirt pocket, tore a corner off a Western Union form, and wrote CALIFORNIA across it in capitals, then underlined the word twice.
"Tell them we got lost," he said. "Tell them the coconuts led us astray." Neither of us had ever been lost in our lives, but the sea was warm, the pie was a nickel, and the Lark Marie sailed without us on the morning tide.
