Mountain lake sunset in an oval frame

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

An oval frame holds a landscape of snow-capped grey mountains under a pink and orange sunset sky with soft clouds. Below, a calm lake reflects the sky in turquoise and orange bands, with a dark pine tree at the centre and blue and pink flowers around the edge of the frame. The bold black outlines and flat, saturated colour fills give it a neo-traditional look.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit yourself down, and mind the bean rows, they've had enough of folk trampling them. You want to hear about the oval glass in the potting shed? The one with the gilt edge the damp has got into? My grandfather bought it off a travelling man at Ambleside fair for a shilling and a promise to carry the fellow's trunk up the hill. The picture was painted on the back of it. Three white-headed mountains, a sky gone the colour of a peach left too long on the windowsill, and a lake lying under it all as flat as a dinner plate. Nobody in our family ever climbed that mountain. He always said the lake was the only thing worth looking at.

Then came the summer the blight got into the potatoes and the rent man started knocking twice a week. He carried the glass down to the water butt and stood there an hour, tilting it so the sunset slid across the surface. My gran came out with the kettle and found him talking to the dark pine in the middle of the picture, asking it what a man ought to do about a landlord.

Here is the part you won't believe. The tree, he swore to his dying day, leaned a little to the left, the way a man leans when he's about to say yes. That autumn he sold the top field to a builder who wanted to put up houses, and he kept the lake. Every evening after, he hung the frame on the cherry tree, and the orange bands on the water held their colour until the light went off the hill.

When we cleared the shed last spring, the glass was the only thing that came out whole. The blue and pink flowers round the rim were still as bright as the day he had them painted, and the tree still leaned, just a touch, towards the gate.
