Sunset palm tree and plumeria on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a tropical sunset over a calm sea, with a dark silhouetted palm tree on the right and a palm frond on the left. Three large orange and pink plumeria flowers sit across the lower part of the arm, with shaded petals and smooth blended gradients. The warm orange, pink and purple sky fades into dark silhouetted foliage, filling the upper arm from shoulder to elbow.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The plumeria arrived from Honolulu in a wet tea towel, and by the time Mrs Ferris carried them up the stairs of Seabreeze House their petals had gone the colour of weak brandy at the edges. "They'll sit fine in a jug of sea water," I told her. She said nothing, which in Mrs Ferris meant she didn't believe me and would wait to be proved right.

I was painting the back wall of the boarding house that summer, forty feet of render facing the car park, because her late husband had once cooked on a freighter that crossed the Pacific and he had never got over the sunsets. Nobody on the terrace below had seen one like it. I mixed rose madder with ultramarine until the sky went bruised and then gold, and every evening I stood on the ladder while the real sun slid down behind the grey Channel, sulking, and the guests drank their gin and called out notes about the clouds.

The palm I left till last. I painted its trunk leaning out over the water, its fronds black and ragged against the orange, and the wind that came off the sea that night caught the wet paint and pulled it. When I came down at dawn the trunk had dragged a long smear toward the drainpipe, and Mrs Ferris was standing in the yard in her dressing gown, holding a single bloom in one hand and a jug in the other. She filled it from the tap, set the flower in the water, and put it on the sill where the tide mark from the storm still showed on the sea wall.
