Palm trees and galaxy sunset on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large colour tattoo covers the upper arm and reaches onto the shoulder, showing two tall palm trees silhouetted against a night sky. The sky blends red, pink and orange with dark clouds, stars and a glowing spiral galaxy, while the foreground shows a sandy beach, a wooden boardwalk and calm water shaded in soft greys and browns. The shading is smooth and painterly, and the scene fills the arm from shoulder to elbow.

The ewes had been fed and the gate chained when I found the postcard wedged behind the feed bin, its corners gone soft with damp. Dad must have put it there years ago. The ink had faded to the colour of weak tea.

On the front, two palms leaned over a pink and orange sky so thick with stars it looked as though someone had flicked white paint across it. A galaxy turned slowly above the dark hills, like a plate spinning on a long stick. Below it, a wooden walk ran over the dunes down to a flat grey sea. Dad went there once, in 1978, on a coach trip with the Young Farmers, and he never spoke of it except to say the sand was the colour of porridge and that nobody had warned him how quiet it would be.

I walked out along the frozen track between the fields that evening, the ice cracking under my boots like someone breaking biscuits. I counted the fence posts the way he taught me, one for every step. When I reached the bottom gate and looked up, the cloud over the ridge had gone the same rose as the card, and a single star was already burning above the hedge.

I went back, pinned the postcard to the kitchen beam with a drawing pin, and left the back door open a crack so the cold could come in and find me.
