California poppies and peace sign on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows several California poppies in bloom, with open orange petals, dark centres and green stems, alongside feathery fern-like leaves. The poppies are shaded with soft gradients from deep orange to pale yellow, and the greenery is rendered in layered greens. A solid black peace sign sits near the lower edge of the forearm, and the three panels show the same arm from slightly different angles.

So the poppies came up along the Dunmore road the spring after the rain, and nobody could say where the seed had been sleeping all those years. Not in any field. Out on the shoulder, between the cattle grid and the rusted hulk of a Chevy, where the tarmac cracks and the feathery green stuff grows like it's sorry for something. You could see them from the petrol station at the crossroads, a smear of orange getting closer every morning.

Lorraine Okafor ran that station, and she kept a tin of old enamel badges by the till that her late husband had collected from every protest march in the county. She'd stand at the forecourt door with her cardigan pulled tight and watch the verge fill up. Her nephew Tomas came out with a trowel and a bucket and dug up a clump so he could replant it behind the pumps, and she slapped his hand and told him to leave the rest alone. Somebody had painted a black peace sign on the marker post by the cattle grid years back, faded to a ghost, and the poppies had climbed right up to it like they'd been sent.

In June the council sent a grader to clear the verge for the autumn works. Lorraine walked out in her slippers and stood in the middle of the lane with a bucket of seed heads held against her chest. The driver leaned out, swore, and then just sat there with the engine running. Nobody moved for a long time. Then he shrugged, swung the blade wide around her and the flowers, and drove on.

Next spring the sign was still there under the sun-bleached paint, and the poppies had seeded clean across the lane. Anyone coming up the road now has to slow down to get past them, which is exactly what Lorraine always said the flowers were for.
