Calvin and Hobbes tattoo on an upper arm, with the boy and tiger lying in grass beside a dark tree and the words I suppose it will all make sense when we grow up.

Calvin and Hobbes quote on upper arm

Lettering · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a small boy lying in grass beside a striped tiger, with a dark tree mass on the left and a few small birds above. The quote I SUPPOSE IT WILL ALL MAKE SENSE WHEN WE GROW UP is set in capital letters across the upper part of the design. The figures and tree are mostly black and grey with soft shading, while the boy's hair and the small birds carry touches of colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The boy was sent up to the ruined keep for water and came back without it. The well had a striped beast asleep across its rim, a thing with more tail than sense, and rather than wake it he sat down in the grass to wait. The grass was long that summer and full of small yellow flowers. Above him the oak leaned over the broken wall as if it too were listening.

The beast opened one eye and asked him why he was so slow. The boy said his mother had told him to be quick, and the beast said mothers said many things, most of them about the weather. They talked through the afternoon about whether the crows on the battlements were gossiping or quarrelling, and whether a castle could be called ruined if people still lived in its cellars. The boy asked how long it would take to become a man. The beast yawned, showing teeth like bent nails, and said he supposed it would all make sense when he got there.

The boy did not believe him. He ran through the gate with his empty bucket, past the swallows nesting under the stones, and told his mother that the tiger knew everything except the answer. She laughed and filled the bucket herself, and when he went back up the hill in the evening the beast was gone, though the grass where it had lain was still flattened in the shape of a striped body.

Years later the boy, grown and carrying his own bucket, stopped at the same well. He set it down, sat in the grass, and waited for something to make sense.
