Calvin and Hobbes quote on upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A cartoon boy lies on the grass beside a tiger beneath a dark tree, with small leaves and birds drifting across the skin. The words I suppose it will all make sense when we grow up sit in capitals beside the scene. The bold black linework and grey shading are set against a plain background, with the design wrapping along the inner upper arm.

Dear Mags, the windfalls are piling up under the Bramley and Dad says the wasps have never been so bold. I am writing this on the back step with my boots off, because the kitchen smells of boiled sugar and Mum has declared war on the jam pan. Last night I lay in the long grass beside the old tree with the split trunk, and I told Bartholomew, the striped cat from the farm next door, that the grown-ups had it all worked out.

Bartholomew did not believe me. He lay on his belly with his chin on his paws, watching a blackbird scold us from the top branches, and said that grown-ups always sounded most certain just before they got something badly wrong. I told him that was exactly the sort of thing a cat would say. He pretended not to hear, which is what he does when he is pleased.

The news came with the post this morning. The orchard is to be sold to the people from Cambridge, and the trees will come out in October to make room for a car park with a view. Dad read the letter twice and then went out to the field and stood under the Bramley without saying anything at all. Mum says he'll come round. Nobody says round to what.

So I gathered the leaves that had come loose in the wind, eleven of them, the crisp brown ones and the green ones still pretending it was summer. I have put them in this envelope. Bartholomew says a sensible person keeps a little of a place in her pocket. I think he is right, though I shall not tell him so.
