Comic panel quote tattoo on upper arm

Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo of a comic strip sits on the upper arm, with a speech bubble of capitalised lettering across the top. Below it, a black panel shows two cartoon figures beneath scattered white stars, drawn in clean bold linework. The photograph is taken at an angle in a cluttered room, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

Mabel Prothero had kept the Scarrow light for nineteen years and had never once looked up at the stars from the gallery rail. She was too busy watching the water. 'Nobody looks,' he said. 'That's the trouble. Everyone's got their heads down.' She told him the sea didn't care whether anyone looked at it, and he said that was exactly his point, the sea was the only thing that did look back. He drew it in pencil on the back of a tide chart: a dark square, a scatter of white dots, and a small figure with its chin tipped up.

The next night the lamp failed at ten past eleven. Mabel climbed the spiral with a torch in her teeth, muttering about the damp, and found the bulb had only cracked its glass. She didn't come down straight away. The sky above the rail was thick with light, far more than she'd ever bothered to notice, and for a while she simply stood there while the beam swept uselessly behind her.

When she came down at dawn, Cyril was waiting in the doorway with his drawing. She took it from him, looked at the little figure with its chin up, and pinned it to the logbook beside the tide times. 'Lot of nonsense up there,' she said. 'Hm,' he said. 'Lot of nonsense up there,' she said again, and went to bed smiling into her pillow.
