The lift in Ashgrove House had been broken since March, so Dean and I took the stairs eleven floors down with his board under one arm, arguing about whether a board with a cracked deck still counted as a board. Dean said yes. I said it was a tray with ambitions.

Our flats faced the car park, and beside the bins there was a patch of smooth tarmac the council had resurfaced for a bowling green nobody ever built. We went there every Saturday. Dean fell off so often that his mum kept a tin of plasters in her handbag. I never fell, only because I never tried anything. I pushed in slow circles with my arms out, like a man crossing a tightrope made of wet paper.
The week the lift was finally fixed, Mr Okafor from the fourth floor came down with a paintbrush in his pocket and a sheet of card under his arm. He'd been painting the bins and said the estate needed a bit of cheer. Dean said Milhouse, obviously, because Milhouse was the only cartoon who kept getting up after every hard knock. Mr Okafor drew him mid-stride on a board, wobbling and grinning, and wrote EVERYTHING'S COMING UP across the top in capitals. Then he handed me the pen and said the bottom bit was mine to finish.
I wrote MILHOUSE underneath. It was the only word the sentence had ever needed. The next morning Dean rolled off the kerb, skinned both palms, and stood up laughing, and I understood that the whole banner had been about him all along.
