Floral frame with quote on forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo on the inner forearm shows a cluster of daffodil-like flowers, small blossoms, leaves and wheat-like stems. A rectangular outlined frame at the right holds the words "this feeling is just for now" in a plain sans-serif typeface. The linework is bold with soft grey shading on the petals, and the composition wraps the flowers around the frame against a plain background.

Mrs Pryce wanted the daffodils cut before the rain, so Ivy and I went out with the shears at six, when the dew still sat on the wheat bundles and the lane smelt of wet coal. Ivy talked the whole way up. She had a letter from a boy in Swindon, a sign-writer, and she read me the best bits while I carried the bucket.

"He says the sea air there is terrible for the lungs," she said, "so he's coming back to Thornleigh for Whitsun, whether his mother likes it or not."
I didn't answer. I was thinking about the card in the window of Hollis's, the one with flowers painted round the edge and the words in square black letters, which Mr Hollis had lettered himself the winter his wife left. Ivy's mother had bought one for her kitchen. My own mother said it sounded like something printed on a tin of biscuits.
We cut until the bucket was heavy and the sun had cleared the church tower. At the bottom of the field the blossom on the damson trees had gone brown at the edges. Ivy stopped, holding her bunch against her chest, and asked whether I thought it was foolish to be this happy about a letter. I said I thought it was foolish to be anything else.
Then the boy came up the lane on a bicycle with a canvas bag over his shoulder, and Ivy dropped the flowers in the mud and ran. I gathered them up, one stem at a time, shook the earth from the petals, and kept my eyes on the hedge. I carried the daffodils home for Mrs Pryce and wrapped them in the Gazette so they would keep until morning.
