Camera and outlined roses on the side
Realism · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A realistic SLR camera with the Nikon name and a teal-tinted lens sits over two outlined roses with leaves. The camera is shaded in black and grey with a highlight on the metal and glass, while the roses and leaves are drawn in clean black linework and left mostly unshaded. The design is centred on the skin with the camera overlapping both roses.

The camera came off the late train to Hollin Cross wrapped in a tea towel, and the stationmaster's boy carried it up the hill because nobody else would touch it. Its owner had died on the platform the day before, a photographer from Leeds who had spent a month walking the valley road before they flooded it. The lens still had a green sheen where he had polished it on his shirt.

Ada Thwaite took it in settlement of her father's debt at the ironmonger's. She oiled the shutter, found a half-used roll in the drawer, and spent the summer walking the lanes between the hedges, where the wild roses were going brown at the edges. She photographed the front doors of the cottages that were due to go under, and then the people who came out to stand in front of them, arms folded, pretending they had not dressed up.
The water came in March. Forty-one families were moved to new houses on the hill, and the valley filled over three winters until only the chapel roof showed above the surface in a dry year. Ada pinned the prints along the chapel hall wall so that anyone could find their own step, their own gate, their own mother in a pinafore holding a kettle.
Her father asked her once why she never photographed the water. She said the camera had come to her full of a dead man's last pictures, and she would not add to them. She kept the lens cap in her apron pocket, her thumb resting on the release, ready for the next door that had not yet been shut.
